Viton® > Specify Parts of Viton® > Viton® and OSHA
Recent legislation has mandated that manufacturing facilities, especially the chemical and petroleum industries, must fully understand and safely manage hazardous material processes and all the equipment used in their facilities. It does not, however, instruct them as to how they must do it.
On May 26, 1992 Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals 29 CFR 1910.119, became law. This standard specified that all affected companies had to complete their first level of compliance to the standard by May 26, 1994 with subsequent compliance dates scheduled through 1997.
The requirements of this standard directly place the compliance responsibility on the manufacturing site. This standard also covers suppliers such as equipment manufacturers and distributors of elastomeric seals. Suppliers must be able to verify the material integrity of their products and advise the plants that their products are fit for the intended service.
Products made of genuine Viton® fluoroelastomers and bear the seal for genuine Viton® afford specifiers (through the entire supply chain) the highest assurance that the polymer content of those seals is 100% virgin Viton® fluoroelastomer from DuPont. Thus, purchasing and plant engineers can be confident of receiving the highest performance and reliability they expect from the seals of Viton®, rather than inferior levels of performance associated with misrepresented products (blends, alloys, products containing reprocessed elastomer) or other lower performing elastomers.
Specifying, purchasing and installing seals made of genuine Viton® affords the highest level of fluoroelastomer quality assurance. Both the plants and seal suppliers can rest assured that they have done their very best to address elastomer integrity and reliable seal performance under the Mechanical Integrity section of OSHA 1910.119.
